HERE'S THE STORY

Another drawing using a photo from my dear friend and teacher, Saud Al Hunaini. I love the different textures in this still life – the woven chair seat, the metal of the lamp, the smooth pomegranates, the corn and husk. Jabal is the Arabic word for mountain and akhdar means “green”. They call it the Green Mountain because the cooler temperatures up there make it possible to grow a number of vegetables and flowers. Roses grown on the mountainside are used to make the famed rose water exported out of this region. When the short rose season is over (it usually only lasts for the month of April) the same gardens with the rose bushes usually also have pomegranate trees. They fruit, conveniently, after the roses so the same land is used twice.

What a wonderful combination of items sitting in the chair all of which relate back to the title. Lovely! XO
