HERE'S THE STORY

My mother’s sister, Norma, loves roses in every way: the real flowers, perfume, and photos. She never owned an original painting before so I took her favorite flower and made it the subject of this one. I love the way the watercolor makes the red of the flowers so varied with shadow and highlight. The smaller version of this painting, “Roses” was a study to work out the values for the larger work. In “Aunt Norma’s Roses”, instead of using baby’s breath flowers, I painted the roses against a more interesting background - an old, crumbling wall. She loved the painting so the original is with her but I’ve made prints available through Fine Art America.
